2017 National Geographic Bee

Morgan was the winner this school year. He passed the written test so he now qualifies for the

State Bee. He participated against other students in grades 4-8 on Match 31, 2017.

An 8th grader won. Morgan and his parents enjoyed the day!

2016 National Geographic Bee

Megan was the winner this school year. She passed the written test so she now qualifies for the

State Bee. She participated against 51 other students in grades 4-8 on April 1, 2016.

An 8th grader won. Megan and her parents had a supertime!

2015 National Geographic Bee

Zachary was the winner this school year. He passed the written test so he now qualifies for the

State Bee. He participated against 49 other students in grades 4-8.

A seventh grader won. Zachary and his dad had a great time!

2014 National Geographic Bee

Tyler was the winner this school year. He qualified for the state competition which was held on April 4, 2014.

There were 53 students. An 8th grader won. Tyler had a wonderful time.

The School Bee this year was held on Thursday, December 13, 2012.

Thomas was the winner!

Thomas completed the 70 question written test on Friday, January 11, 2013.

It has been sent to Washington, DC. We now must await the results to see if Thomas makes it into the state finals.

Thomas, a fourth grader, represented our school at the <?Rhode Island state finals of the National Geographic Bee on Friday, April 5, 2013 at Rhode Island College in Providence. Students from around the state, in grades 4-8, were in this social studies contest. A seventh grader won. Although Thomas was not the ultimate winner out of the fifty-two contestants, he did an awesome job. We are proud of you, Thomas!

2012 National Geographic Bee

Our school Bee was held on December 9, 2011. Kyle is representing <?Hope Valley this year. He completed the written test on January 6, 2012. We have the test results from Washington, <?DC. Kyle made it!!! He is going to the State Bee on March 30th!!! Way to go, Kyle!!!

UPDATE-

Kyle was one of 58 students to qualify for Rhode Island's state level competition of the National Geographic Bee. It was held on Friday, March 30th at Rhode Island College in Providence. There were 11 girls and 47 boys competing from grades 4-8. Students were primarily from public or catholic schools. Some were even home schooled. All were very excited and Kyle was no exception. He had a smile from ear to ear for the entire afternoon. Although he did not make it to the final round of ten contestants, he did our school proud!!! He was determined to stay until the very end. Kyle sat in the balcony with his parents during the final round and continued to tell them many of the correct answers. He was pleased to find out that the winner this year was a sixth grader who last qualified for the competition when he was just a fourth grader himself. Kyle received a Geo Bee t-shirt and certificate, as well as special award certificates from Governor Lincoln D. Chafee, U. S. Representative David Cicilline, U.S. Senator Jack Reed, and U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse. The USA National Geographic Bee competition was on television in late May.

2011 National Geographic Bee

For the 23^rd year, the National Geographic Society is holding the National Geographic Bee for students in the fourth through eighth grades in thousands of schools across the United States and in 5 U.S. territories, as well as in Department of Defense Dependents Schools around the world. The 2011 Bee is sponsored by Google.

The winner of the Geographic Bee held at Hope Valley Elementary School on December 3, 2011 was Megan. In order to advance to the next level of the competition, Megan was given a written examination on December 17, 2010. This exam has been mailed to Washington, DC. If Megan achieves a certain percentage of correct responses she will be invited to participate at the state level competition in Providence, RI on April 1, 2011. The state winner will be sent to the national championship in Washington, DC to be held on May 24 and 25, 2011.

Last year, Rhode Island’s Oliver Lucier, 13, won second place and a $15,000 college scholarship. The national winner received a $25,000 scholarship, a lifetime membership in the NGS, and a trip to the Galapagos Islands.

March 2, 2011 update: Megan made it!!! She is going to the state finals on April 1st. Way to go, Megan!!!

April 2, 2011 update: Megan participated in the state competition yesterday at Rhode Island College. Although she did not make it to the final round, she was proud of her accomplishment and enjoyed the entire day. There were 53 students competing and an 8th grader from North Cumberland Middle School won.
